Surprising facts:

For a long time we have been able to build houses that use almost no energy for heating. A super-insulated house built in Milton Keynes in 1986 only needed heating when outside temperatures went to -10°C, a very unusual occurrence in the UK.

Houses built to Passivhaus standards, which can be applied to many climates, use about 10% of the energy of a normal house and don’t need a heating system.

It is possible to retrofit many different types of existing UK houses to reduce energy use by 60% or more.

The US runs about 8 large power stations just to power stuff that is turned off, the so-called “vampire” power used by electrical items on standby.

1.3 billion people in the world have no access to electricity.

Globally 2 million people a year die from air pollution.

Defending the Persian Gulf area costs the U.S. about $279 billion a year, about $66 per barrel of oil shipped through the Straits of Hormuz.
